Understanding Remanufacturing
“Reman” – this is the abbreviation for the term “remanufacturing”, which, in very general terms, describes the refurbishment or reprocessing of used equipment or products. During the remanufacturing process, these are brought up to the quality standard of a new product.
The Remanufacturing Process and Its Benefits
In concrete terms, the whole process works like this:
First, the relevant product in question is subjected to a functional test and remanufacturing options are evaluated.
This is followed by complete disassembly and thorough cleaning of all individual parts. Defective components are then repaired or replaced with new ones as required and the entire product is reassembled before it is finally checked again for functionality.
Old parts or products that have been refurbished in this way offer lower costs and a better environmental balance. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation has calculated that remanufactured components save significant amounts of CO₂ equivalents compared to new parts production.
